Ayathan Alok Chand:-

Ayathan Alok (also known as Alok Chand Ayathan) is an Indian author, apothecary, and philanthropist from Kerala, India. He is known for his writings on Kerala’s social reform history and for documenting the legacy of the Ayathan family, particularly the life and contributions of his great-grandfather Rao Sahib Dr. Ayathan Gopalan, The Father of Brahma Samaj in Kerala, a prominent physician Renaissance leader and social reformer of the Kerala Renaissance. 

Alok is the author of the Malayalam biography Appan: Oru Ormapusthakam and the English historical biography Darsar: The Untold Story of an Unsung Hero, both focusing on the life and reformist contributions of Dr. Ayathan Gopalan. 

Early life and family background
Ayathan Alok was born in Calicut (Kozhikode), Kerala, into the historically prominent Ayathan family, an aristocratic family of Malabar known for its contributions to medicine, education, and social reform. 

He is the great-grandson of Rao Sahib Dr. Ayathan Gopalan (1863–1948), a physician and social reformer who founded the Sugunavardhini Movement, the Depressed Classes Mission, and helped propagate the Brahmo Samaj movement in Kerala. 

His lineage within the Ayathan family is recorded as follows:
Dr. Ayathan Gopalan – Social reformer and physician
Ayathan Devadath – Son of Gopalan and social reform supporter
Dr. Mandhakini Bai- Social reformer, Wife to Ayathan Devadath.
Ayathan Karamchand Dath – Son of Devadath
Ayathan Alok – 4th generation and great grandson of Dr. Ayathan Gopalan Author and historian of the family legacy.

Alok is also the grandson of Dr. Mandhakini Bai, a physician and social activist who participated in reform initiatives linked to the Sugunavardhini movement and Brahmo Samaj, advocating women’s and children’s rights. 

The Ayathan family includes notable historical figures such as Dr. Ayathan Janaki Ammal, the first female doctor and surgeon of Kerala.

Literary work:-
Ayathan Alok is primarily known for his historical and biographical writing. His works aim to document the legacy of Kerala’s social reform movements and preserve the history of the Ayathan family.
His major books include:
Appan: Oru Ormapusthakam (Malayalam, 2021) – the first comprehensive biography and memoir about Dr. Ayathan Gopalan written in Malayalam. 

Darsar: The Untold Story of an Unsung Hero (English) – a biography describing the life and reformist activities of Dr. Ayathan Gopalan and his role in Kerala’s renaissance movements. 

These works were developed after extensive research and are considered important contributions to documenting the social reform movements of Malabar.

Apothecary and social work:-
Apart from writing, Ayathan Alok works as an apothecary and is engaged in healthcare and social welfare activities. 

He is also associated with philanthropic initiatives and community service efforts that continue the Ayathan family’s long tradition of social reform and humanitarian work. 
Alok founded the Ayathan Charitable Trust (ACT) in 2020, an organization focused on healthcare support, charity initiatives, and social welfare activities and runs the Ayathan Clinics and Hospitals under it.
Role in preserving the Ayathan legacy
Ayathan Alok is regarded as one of the contemporary custodians of the Ayathan family’s historical legacy. His writings, research, and public engagement aim to preserve the memory of the reform movements initiated by his ancestors.

Through his work, he highlights the social reform ideals associated with the Brahmo Samaj movement in Kerala, including:
promotion of women’s education
opposition to caste discrimination
social equality and humanitarian values
rationalism and progressive reform
These ideals were central to the movements led by Dr. Ayathan Gopalan during the Kerala Renaissance.
