First Malayali Women Doctor and Surgeon
Ayathan Janaki Ammal: The First Women Doctor and Surgeon of Kerala.
Dr. Ayathan Janaki Ammal (1878 – 1945) was the first female doctor and surgeon of Kerala, British India. She earned her LMP (Licensed Medical Practitioner) qualification from Madras Medical College in 1907, becoming the earliest woman from the region to receive a formal medical education and practice professionally in hospitals across Malabar and Cochin provinces. She is also recognized as the first woman doctor from the Thiyya community.
Early Life and Education:-
Janaki Ammal was born in 1878 into the Thiyya community in the Malabar region, which was then part of the Madras Presidency under British rule. Motivated by the growing momentum for women's education and the social reform movements of the late 19th century, she pursued medical studies at Madras Medical College—one of the oldest and most prominent institutions in British India.
In 1907, she graduated with an LMP degree, a government-recognized medical qualification at the time. This credential authorized her to work as a government medical officer and surgeon.
Career:-
Dr. Janaki Ammal began her medical career shortly after graduation and served in several government hospitals across Malabar, Calicut (now Kozhikode)and Cochin provinces. She worked as a government surgeon, providing medical services primarily to women and children in underserved areas. Her work also intersected with the Sagunavardhini Movement, a social reform initiative that aimed at uplifting marginalized communities through education and moral reform.
She served with distinction and was recognized for her contributions to public health and social welfare by the colonial administration.
Legacy:-
Dr. Ayathan Janaki Ammal holds the distinction of being the first qualified woman doctor and surgeon of Kerala, having entered medical service nearly a decade before Dr. Mary Poonen Lukose, who earned an MBBS in the United Kingdom and returned to Travancore in 1916.
While Dr. Mary Poonen Lukose later became known for her pioneering roles as the first female Surgeon General and first woman legislator in Travancore, Dr. Janaki Ammal's earlier entry into medicine in 1907 marks her as the true forerunner of women in the medical profession in Kerala.
Despite her historic achievements, Janaki Ammal's contributions have not received the widespread recognition they deserve in mainstream historical narratives. However, recent research and public interest have begun to reclaim her rightful place in Kerala's medical and social history.
